Travel into Romania’s past as you take a narrow-gauge, wood-fired steam train deep into the Carpathian Mountains. As you travel in the old way along the Vaser River, notice the train whistle and the hiss of the steam. The Vaser River Railway is the only forestry line in Romania still in operation—though now only for tourists. Arriving at the top of the line at Paltin Station, you’ll enjoy a delectable, catered picnic lunch, and perhaps a small hike with a fabulous view. Later in the afternoon, take the train back down to Viseu de Sus to complete your excursion.

From Brasov, opt for a day trip to the incredible Libearty Bear Sanctuary, over a hundred acres of pristine hazel and oak forest dedicated to the lives of Romanian bears. The sanctuary allows these magnificent animals, formerly used as attractions in zoos and small roadside cages, to experience a normal life free of human cruelty. The bears can now roam free in woodland enclosures complete with hibernation dens and freshwater pools, and visitors can observe happy, healthy bears living in their natural setting. Visits to the sanctuary are limited, but can be arranged with advance notice.
