Visit Bulgaria

A unique vacation in Bulgaria like never before

Bulgaria keeps getting described as a “hidden gem”, which is ironic because it’s been hiding in plain sight for decades. Ancient Thracian civilizations, five centuries of Ottoman layering, Orthodox monasteries carved into cliff faces, Roman ruins that Plovdiv locals walk past every morning on the way to work. The country has more archaeological depth per square kilometer than most of Western Europe, and a fraction of the visitors.

The problem isn’t that Bulgaria isn’t worth visiting. It’s that most tours skim the surface and call it done.

What Bulgaria has to offer

  • Bulgaria has more UNESCO World Heritage sites than most visitors expect and almost none of them get the foot traffic they deserve. Walking into Boyana Church or standing inside the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, you won’t be fighting crowds for a photo.

  • The Kazanlak Valley produces more than 70% of the world’s rose oil. In May and early June, the rose fields are one of the genuinely striking landscapes in Eastern Europe, not because travel blogs say so, but because it simply is.

  • Plovdiv is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. Its Roman amphitheater sits in the middle of a living city, not behind fences. People still hold concerts there.

  • The Thracian gold housed in the National History Museum in Sofia includes pieces dated to the 4th century BC. If you’ve never seen ancient goldwork of that craftsmanship in person, it’s a stop that tends to leave people quiet for a few minutes.

  • Bulgaria sits at a cultural crossroads. Five centuries of Ottoman influence left a visible mark on its architecture, food, and music. That blend of Balkan and Eastern traditions is something you feel walking through the bazaars of Plovdiv and the mosques of Sofia, not something you just read about.

Spectacular Mountains

Bulgaria features stunning mountain ranges like the Balkans and Rila, popular for hiking, skiing, and climbing.

Archaeological Treasures

Bulgaria is home to numerous significant archaeological sites, including the ancient city of Plovdiv, which is among the oldest cities in Europe.

Traditional Crafts

Bulgaria has a rich tradition of crafts, including pottery, woodcarving, and lace-making, with artisans using techniques passed down through generations.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Bulgaria boasts UNESCO sites like Rila Monastery, the Boyana Church and the Madara Rider.

Why Us?

Why should you choose us?

Bulgaria rewards the traveler who slows down. The monastery courtyard you linger in long enough to speak with a monk. The Thracian tomb that takes ten quiet minutes to properly absorb. The village outside Koprivshtitsa where lunch turns into two hours because the owner starts talking.

None of that happens on a large group tour. Not because those tours are badly run, but because their job is moving twenty people efficiently, not giving you time to actually be somewhere.

Our job is the opposite: one guide, your vehicle. A route built around what you actually want to see, at a pace that makes sense for you, not for the next stop on a fixed itinerary.

If Bulgaria is on your list, we’re happy to put together a free, no-obligation itinerary proposal tailored to your dates and interests, whether that’s a private tour for two or a small group traveling together. Just reach out and we’ll take it from there.

We offer fully customizable tours and we build the whole trip around you and your travel companions.
Travel with a knowledgeable private guide who actually knows the country.
Visit only the sights you are interested in, spend as much time as you want to visit them, and enjoy the flexibility only a private tour can offer you.
We have 15+ years of activity and over 30 years of experience in the travel industry.
We are a licensed tour operator, we have the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, and we boast 5-star reviews from hundreds of customers (4.9/5 stars across 330+ verified reviews on TripAdvisor and Trustpilot).

Is Balkan Trails the right fit for you?

Great fit if you're looking for:

  • A private itinerary, not a shared departure date
  • Access to places that don’t show up on standard Bulgaria tour listings
  • A guide who can tell you why the Kazanlak Tomb matters, not just what it is
  • Mid-range to premium accommodation, locally owned where possible
  • Flexibility to adjust the day as it goes

Probably not the right fit if you want:

  • A low-budget large-group package with fixed dates
  • A tour that covers eight countries in twelve days
  • A last-minute booking

Toma Georgiev

Toma Georgiev

The eldest of all from the entire Balkan Trails Team, a typical “old school” guy, punctual, responsible, with emphasis on every single detail, sometimes a bit too talkative (hopefully not too boring). Toma first fell in love with traveling and guiding as a student at the University of Sofia. As of today, with close to 30 years of practical experience in tourism, Toma helped a lot when starting the business of Balkan Trails many years ago. He was actually the one running the very first tour that we had in Bulgaria in September 2009 – a fact that he is always proud to share with all of his new Balkan Trails clients. Toma has a wide range of interests in the fields of social life (politics, economics, history, geography), with excellent English, starting from the English Language School that he proudly graduated with honors in the mid 80-ies as his high school, as well as from his study in the USA in the early 90-ies.  Born and raised in Plovdiv, Toma is also very proud of his home town, known as one of the oldest Europe and he canbtell you stories for hours while taking you alongside the cobble-stoned streets of the Old town area. Toma will be happy to be your driver/guide while touring around Bulgaria, as well as to take you to his country house for a while if en route with your itinerary, where you could taste the delicious cherries that you can pick from the trees in his garden, while enjoying the view from his beautiful outdoor veranda – some of these small things that help you get a sense of what Toma calls “real life in the country”.
Marina Zareva

Marina Zareva

Marina is a professional tour guide with over 15 years of experience, dedicated to sharing her deep love for travel, history, and her homeland. For her, being on the road is not just part of the job, it is where she truly belongs. Guiding comes naturally as a reflection of her passion for exploring and connecting people with places. She holds a Master’s degree in Cultural Tourism, which complements her practical experience and enriches the depth of her tours. Her strong interest in history and culture, combined with an ongoing curiosity, drives her to continuously discover new destinations. Even outside of work, Marina enjoys venturing off the beaten path, exploring corners of Bulgaria, from its highest peaks to its quietest trails, so she can offer her guests fresh perspectives and authentic experiences. Marina believes that a good guide should be not only well-informed and up to date, but also courteous, curious, and easy-going. Her approach combines solid knowledge of the cultural landmarks and highlights with a relaxed manner, allowing guests to feel comfortable while exploring and learning along the way. Whether you are interested in Bulgaria’s history, traditions, scenic landscapes, or simply looking for the perfect place to enjoy a good glass of wine, Marina will be delighted to accompany you and make your journey truly memorable.

How we design a well-paced Bulgaria itinerary

Bulgaria’s road network varies dramatically by region. The Rhodopes require a different approach than the Danube Plain. We factor in actual road conditions and scenic driving time (especially on mountain routes) so you’re never rushed through the part that deserves the most time.

Rila in the morning before the day-trippers arrive from Sofia is a completely different experience from Rila at noon. These details matter, and we plan around them.

Bulgaria can easily become a relentless chain of churches, fortresses, and museums if you’re not careful. We build breathing room in: a slow lunch in a village mehana, a market visit in Plovdiv’s Kapana district, an unscheduled hour in Veliko Tarnovo just to walk.

The Rose Festival window (late May to early June) books up fast and changes the route around Kazanlak entirely. The Black Sea coast behaves differently in July than in September. We plan around Bulgarian seasonality, not a generic Eastern Europe calendar.

Every property we book in Bulgaria has been personally checked, not pulled from a catalog. In Veliko Tarnovo, that might mean a restored house above the gorge. In Plovdiv, a boutique in the old town. We know which hotels are actually central and which ones only claim to be.

Planning support - before and during your tour

From your first message to your last day in Bulgaria, you’ll have real people looking after your trip, not a ticketing system or an automated response queue.

Every inquiry is answered directly by Vlad or Zoe (the owners, and Zoe a Bulgarian herself). You’re not going through a sales team or a general inbox. You get a straight answer from someone who knows the country personally and has been working in its travel industry for decades.

Share your travel dates and what draws you to Bulgaria, and we’ll put together a custom itinerary proposal and send it to you within 24 hours.

We go back and forth as many times as needed. There’s no limit on how many changes we make before the trip is exactly what you want. If something doesn’t feel right, we fix it.

Your guide is your first point of contact for anything that comes up during the tour. Beyond that, Zoe and Vlad are personally reachable throughout the duration of your trip, not just during office hours.

Tell us upfront and we handle the rest. Dietary requirements are communicated directly to every restaurant and accommodation involved in your tour before you arrive. For guests with limited mobility, we adjust walking portions and find alternatives where the route allows. Traveling with kids? We factor that into the pacing and activity choices from the start, not as an afterthought.

Your driver monitors your flight in real time, so a late arrival doesn’t mean a stranded one. They’ll be waiting whenever you land. For itinerary changes once the tour is underway, we’re as flexible as the situation allows and if any change carries an additional cost, we’ll be upfront about it before anything is confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Balkan Trails offers fully private and small-group tours across Bulgaria, each built around your specific travel dates, interests, and pace, not a fixed group calendar. Our two starting itineraries cover the country’s main highlights: the 5-nights Bulgaria at a Glance and the 9-nights Best of Bulgaria. Both can be modified, extended, or combined with Romania before we finalize anything.

All our tours of Bulgaria include:

  • The possibility of having your itinerary customized before the tour starts at no extra charge. The itinerary customization can include pacing changes, selection of hotels, sights we include (or skip), etc.
  • Great flexibility regarding changes to the daily itinerary even after the start of the tour
  • The services of a private licensed English-speaking guide (also driving)
  • All guide’s expenses (meals, accommodation, etc.)
  • Private transportation in an air-conditioned car (or minivan, depending on your group’s size)
  • All vehicle-related expenses, such as gasoline, parking, and road tolls
  • Complimentary wireless internet access in the vehicle so that you can stay in touch with your loved ones even while traveling
  • Entrance fees and guided visits. If you wish to add any sight on the go, the guide will always be available with information during the visit
  • Accommodation in locally-owned, centrally located 3, 4, and 5-star hotels or B&Bs, with breakfast included
  • Airport transfers

Not included:

  • Airfare to and from Bulgaria
  • Meals or beverages other than the included ones
  • Photo fees (some sights require the payment of a fee for allowing you to take pictures – they are mostly inexpensive, around 2 or 3 euro/sight)
  • Credit card fees (3.25%). We offer you the possibility of paying for the tour in your home currency via a domestic bank transfer
  • Gratuities for your guide (entirely up to your discretion)

Absolutely. Let us know which properties you’d like swapped out and we’ll handle the alternatives. You can flag specific hotels or simply tell us your preferred accommodation level: 4-star only, boutique only, whatever fits, and we’ll rebuild that part of the list accordingly.

No, we suggest that all our clients carry medical insurance to cover any health-related expenses during the trip. We also recommend getting insurance for trip interruptions and lost or stolen luggage.

Yes, and there’s no extra charge for it. Every tour we offer is a starting point, not a fixed contract. We can adjust the pacing, swap destinations, combine two itineraries, or build something entirely new around the places you want to see. Just tell us what you have in mind.

You can book a tour by sending an inquiry through the website’s contact forms, detailing your preferences and travel plans. Also, you can contact us through the chat widget located in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Balkan Trails is a family-run operator led by Vlad and Zoe Trestian. Zoe is Bulgarian, grew up here, and handles all Bulgaria tour planning personally. When you send an inquiry, you’re not going through a call center or a booking platform. You get a direct response from someone with firsthand knowledge of the country, its roads, its points of interest, and which hotels are actually worth staying in. Tours are fully private or in a small-group, guides are hand-picked and long-term partners, and every hotel on our list has been personally checked, not selected from a wholesale catalog.

The best time to visit Bulgaria depends on what you want to see. Late April to June is ideal for most itineraries: mild temperatures, manageable crowds, and if your trip falls in late May or early June, you can time it around the Rose Festival in Kazanlak, when the Valley of Roses is actually in bloom. September and October are equally strong: cooler weather, fewer visitors at major sites like Rila Monastery and Veliko Tarnovo, and excellent light for photography. Summer (July–August) works well for the Black Sea coast. Nessebar and Sozopol are best visited then, but inland sites, especially Sofia and Plovdiv, get busy. Winter suits a specific kind of traveler: Rila Monastery in snow is one of the most striking sights in the Balkans, and Bansko runs as a ski destination from December through March.

EU and EEA citizens do not need a visa to enter Bulgaria. Bulgaria joined the Schengen Area in 2025. Citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia, the UK, and many other countries can enter Bulgaria visa-free for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Citizens of other nationalities should verify requirements with the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in their country before travel, as conditions vary and policies can change. We recommend confirming current entry rules closer to your departure date.

Bulgaria’s highlights span several distinct regions, each with a different character. Sofia is the starting point for most tours: the Boyana Church (a UNESCO site with remarkably preserved 13th-century frescoes), the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and the National History Museum, which houses one of the finest collections of Thracian gold in the world. Plovdiv is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe: its Roman amphitheater sits in the middle of a working city and still hosts events, while the Ottoman-era old town and the Kapana creative district make it worth at least two days. Rila Monastery, tucked into a mountain valley at 1,147 meters, is the country’s most visited site and one of the few that justifies the reputation. Veliko Tarnovo, the medieval capital, overlooks a river gorge from Tsarevets Fortress and is best experienced in the evening when the crowds thin out. Further east, the old town of Nessebar on the Black Sea coast is a UNESCO site that most international visitors overlook entirely. For something genuinely off the standard circuit: the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, the cliff monastery at Ivanovo, and the village of Koprivshtitsa, where the 19th-century National Revival architecture is still intact and lived-in.

Private and small-group Bulgaria tours with Balkan Trails start from 985€ per person for a 5-night itinerary (Bulgaria at a Glance) and go up to 2,110€+ per person for a 9-night comprehensive tour (Best of Bulgaria). The final price depends on tour duration, group size, accommodation level, and any customizations to the itinerary. Traveling as a couple or small group generally reduces the per-person cost. All prices include private guiding, transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle, accommodation with breakfast, entrance fees, and airport transfers. International flights to and from Bulgaria are not included. Send us an inquiry with your dates and preferences and you’ll receive a tailored proposal within 24 hours.

It depends on how much of the country you want to see and how much you want to actually absorb each place rather than just pass through it.

A 5-nights itinerary (our Bulgaria at a Glance tour) covers the historical core: Sofia and Boyana Church, a full day at Rila Monastery, the village of Koprivshtitsa, Plovdiv’s Old Town and Roman theatre, the Thracian Tomb at Kazanlak, the Shipka Pass, and Veliko Tarnovo with Arbanassi. That’s approximately 850 km across central and southern Bulgaria: compact, well-paced, and enough to leave with a genuine sense of the country.

A 9-nights itinerary (our Best of Bulgaria tour) extends the circuit significantly, adding the Danube city of Ruse, the Roman ruins at Nicopolis ad Istrum, the cliff-carved Ivanovo Rock Churches, the Sveshtari Thracian Tomb, the Madara Horseman, the Black Sea coast (Varna, Balchik, Nessebar), Bachkovo Monastery in the Rhodopes, and the Thracian complex at Starosel. Total distance: approximately 1,700 km covering nearly every distinct region of the country.

If you’ve never been to Bulgaria and want a solid first trip without rushing, 5 days is a realistic minimum. If the Black Sea coast, the Danube region, or multiple Thracian sites are on your list, build in at least 10. Both itineraries can be customized. shortened, extended, or restructured around specific interests.

Bulgaria is a safe destination for tourists. Violent crime targeting visitors is rare, and the country is broadly comparable in safety to other EU member states in the region. In Sofia and Plovdiv, the standard urban precautions apply: be aware of your surroundings in crowded areas and use licensed taxis or rideshare apps rather than unlicensed drivers near transport hubs. Outside the main cities, Bulgaria is exceptionally relaxed and welcoming. Rural areas, mountain monasteries, and smaller towns present very little friction for travelers. On a private guided tour, your guide manages all logistics and transportation from day one, which removes most of the practical risks that independent travelers might run into. Travel insurance is always recommended.

Yes, a combined Bulgaria and Romania tour is one of our most requested itineraries, and one we’re well set up to handle since both countries are run by the same team. We offer dedicated packages ranging from 7-night focused combinations to 15+ night tours covering both countries in depth. You can see the full options on our Bulgaria & Romania tours page.
