Tour Itinerary

Arrive inย Sofia, meet your guide, and unpack your bags at your hotel in the city center. Itโ€™s the perfect starting point for experiencing the spirited, reinvigorated culture of the Bulgarian capital.

In the afternoon, enjoy aย guided walkย along Sofiaโ€™s magical yellow-paved streets, visiting the breathtaking Aleksandar Nevski Cathedral, the Parliament, the Presidency, and the ancient St. Georgeโ€™s Rotunda. Journey to the base of Vitosha Mountain to visit the medieval Boyana Church, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its exhaustive collection of intact 13th-century frescoes and iconic art.

*Should you travel to Sofia on a flight that arrives late in the afternoon or evening, the city tour can also be done the next morning

Overnight in ย Sofia, Hotel Niky*** (centrally located)

Todayโ€™s excursion takes you into the Rila Mountains to visit the magnificent Rila Monastery, Bulgariaโ€™s most revered religious site and a UNESCO World Heritage treasure. Founded in the 10th century by Saint Ivan of Rila, the monastery impresses with its colorful frescoes, ornate wood carvings, and peaceful alpine setting.

Youโ€™ll also visit the monasteryโ€™s museum, which houses precious icons, manuscripts, and the renowned Rafail Crossโ€”an extraordinary example of medieval craftsmanship.

Return to Sofia in the afternoon.

Overnight in ย Sofia, Hotel Niky*** (centrally located)

Depart Sofia this morning and travel east toward Koprivshtitsa, a beautifully preserved mountain town closely linked to Bulgariaโ€™s 19th-century National Revival. Stroll through its cobbled lanes and visit a few of its colorful houses, now turned into small museums that tell the stories of the revolutionaries and poets who shaped modern Bulgaria.

Continue south to Plovdiv, one of Europeโ€™s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Upon arrival, enjoy an orientation walk in center.

Overnight inย Plovdiv,ย Hotel Evmolpia***ย (located in the Old Town)

Begin your day with a guided walking tour through Plovdiv, one of Europeโ€™s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Wander the cobbled streets of the Old Town, where colorful 19th-century houses lean gracefully over narrow lanes. Step inside the magnificentย Roman Theatre, still in use after nearly two millennia, and admire sweeping views over the city. Continue to theย Ethnographical Museum, housed in a splendid Renaissance mansion, for an intimate look at Bulgariaโ€™s folk traditions and daily life from centuries past.

The afternoon is yours to explore at your own paceโ€”perhaps linger in one of Kapanaโ€™s vibrant cafรฉs, browse local artisan shops, or simply soak in the cityโ€™s easy charm and artistic energy. Plovdivโ€™s blend of ancient history and youthful creativity makes it a delight to discover at leisure.

Overnight inย Plovdiv,ย Hotel Evmolpia***ย (located in the Old Town)

Begin the day with a guided tour of Tsarevets Fortress, the stronghold of Bulgariaโ€™s medieval kings. Walking along its stone ramparts and towers offers sweeping views and a vivid sense of the cityโ€™s glorious past.

Continue to Samovodene Street, where traditional workshops and small galleries keep Veliko Tarnovoโ€™s artisan spirit aliveโ€”an ideal place to meet local craftsmen and see their work firsthand.

A short drive brings you to the nearby village of Arbanassi, famous for its beautifully preserved 17th-century architecture. Visit the Konstantsalieva House, once home to a wealthy merchant family, and the richly painted Nativity Church, a masterpiece of Bulgarian religious art.

In the afternoon, cross the Danube and reach Bucharest.

Overnight in Bucharest, Hotel Capitol**** (centrally located)

Today, youโ€™ll journey to the medieval Transylvanian city ofย Sibiu. On the way, make a stop at theย Cathedral of Curtea de Arges, an architectural wonder featuring cupolas that seem to lean and twist at impossible angles. Its construction in the early 1500s, marred by obstacles and delays, resulted in the legendary sacrifice of Ana, wife of the head architect; she is said to rest within the walls of the cathedral.

Next, drive north into the wild Carpathian Mountains to take photos of the 13th-centuryย Poenari Castle, the famed stronghold of Vlad the Impaler. The impossibly high cliffs and strategic location provided him with the perfect vantage point for maintaining power and control. During an infamous siege by the Turks, Vladโ€™s wife, Jusztina of Moldavia, flung herself from the steep precipice to avoid being taken prisoner by her enemies.

On your voyage to Sibiu, youโ€™ll drive on the renownedย Transfagarasan Road. The route traverses the Carpathian Mountains at 2000 meters (6000 feet), and the viewsโ€”miles of misty cliffs and hairpin turnsโ€”are spectacular. No wonder itโ€™s considered by the BBC Top Gear team to be โ€œthe best road in the world.โ€

After your journey, arrive in the idyllic Saxon settlement of Sibiu. Your guide will take you on aย walking tour of the medieval Old Town, the historic center of the most heavily protected of all Saxon cities. Visit the iron-cast Bridge of Lies, the extensive, labyrinthine fortifications, and the Passage of Stairs.

Overnight in Sibiu,ย Hotel Art****ย (located in the Old Town)

*please note the Transfagarasan road is open only between June and September. If your tour takes place outside this period, you will travel on the road going along the Olt River valley.

Start your day by exploring the Biertan fortified church (UNESCO World Heritage Site). The Saxons used this architectural style extensively in Transylvanian villages in the 13th and 15th centuries to protect themselves against invasions. These churches are known as โ€œpeasant fortified churchesโ€ because they were constructed and maintained by locals. The Biertan church was the last to be built according to this pattern in the early 16th century. For the next 200 years, it served as the Transylvanian Archbishopโ€™s seat, thus becoming one of the most important churches in the region.

Your Transylvanian journey continues in Sighisoara, a medieval citadel inhabited without interruption since its construction. Enjoy a guided walk through the Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and ascend the 800-year-old Clock Tower to tour the fascinating History Museum contained within. The citadelโ€™s great height affords an impressive view of the surrounding area. You can also climb the 17th-century wooden-covered staircase to the Church-on-the-Hill, beautifully preserved since medieval times.

Sighisoara is widely known as Vlad the Impalerโ€™s birthplace, who provided a rich source of inspiration for Dracula. Born here in 1431, Vlad became Prince of Wallachia in the 1450s and was widely feared by his enemies due to his ruthless tactics in battle. The actual house of his birth still stands; it is now one of Sighisoaraโ€™s many restaurants. Return to Sibiu in the late afternoon.

Overnight in Sibiu,ย Art Hotel****ย (located in the Old Town)

Today, drive toward Maramures, an area where local traditions and culture have scarcely altered over the centuries. On the way, visitย Salina Turda, one of the oldest salt mines in the region. This vast, highly unusual underground landmark is characterized by stalactites, a subterranean lake, and enormous, illuminated machinery.

Your next stop is the city ofย Cluj-Napoca, a young, vivacious metropolitan center. One of Romaniaโ€™s foremost universities is located here, making for a fun, energized street vibe. Join your guide for a stroll in the central area of the city.

After your tour, head north to see the famed wooden architecture and carved gates of Maramures, a region immediately surrounded by untamed wilderness and vast reserves of wildlife. Visit the towering 18th-centuryย wooden church at Surdestiย (UNESCO World Heritage Site), devoted to Archangels Michael and Gabriel.

Overnight in the village of Breb, inย Pensiunea Lucia***, home-cooked dinner included

Experience the luxury of devoting a full day to a cultural exploration of Maramures. Its traditions and medieval landscape are virtually untouched by the passage of time.

Check out theย local marketย (depending on the day of the week), filled with culinary delicacies and convivial exchanges between neighbors; then visit theย Merry Cemetery in Sapanta. Here, an explosion of festive color belies the existence of a graveyard, unabashedly celebrating the lives of those who have passed. Hand-painted imagery in the naรฏve style depicts significant life events, providing an alternate view of death that may have its roots in the Daciansโ€™ era, the ancestors of the Romanians.

Next, tour the tallest wooden structure in existence: the iconicย Peri Monastery. Towering over the landscape at 250 feet, the monument exemplifies the incredibly high standards of living traditional craftsmanship.

Next, proceed to the nearby city of Sighetu Marmatiei, where youโ€™ll tour theย Memorial to the Victims of Communism. The Communist era, decidedly forceful and oppressive, dominated the psyche of everyone it touched, effectively changing the way people were allowed to think and approach their lives.

Overnight in the village of Breb, inย Pensiunea Lucia***, home-cooked dinner included

Depart Gura Humorului this morning and travel south through the stunning landscapes of the Eastern Carpathians. The journey takes you along one of Romaniaโ€™s most spectacular routesโ€”the Bicaz Gorges, where towering limestone cliffs rise dramatically on either side of the winding road.

Continue through the scenic Red Lake area before descending into Transylvania, reaching the medieval city of Braศ™ovby late afternoon. Upon arrival, enjoy a guided walk through the Old Town, where cobbled streets, colorful houses, and Gothic landmarks like the Black Church capture the spirit of Saxon Transylvania.

Overnight in Brasov,ย Hotel Schuster****ย (located in the Old Town)

Morning brings a tour of Bran Castleย (also known as Draculaโ€™s Castleโ€”the psychological link with the famous story is very strong). Wander through the medieval courtyard, gardens, and secret passageway.

The road to Sinaia brings you through unparalleled mountain scenery and endless, sweeping views of the wild Carpathians. Once in town, youโ€™ll tour the 19th-centuryย Peles Castle, the opulent residence of Carol I. The creators of its unbelievably ornate interior knew no budget or limit; every conceivable luxury known to the era was included and showcased. Nearby, youโ€™ll visit theย Sinaia Monastery, founded in 1695 and named after Mt. Sinai in Egypt.

Arrive in Bucharest in the late afternoon.

Overnight in Bucharest, Hotel Capitol**** (centrally located)

This will be your last day in Romania. You will say goodbye to the friends youโ€™ve made here and head on to the airport for your flight home.
