The “Mocanita” steam train in Maramures, Romania

Romania

Tour Description

From Viseu de Sus, take an old-fashioned train ride into the high Carpathian Mountains—a lush, green, incredibly picturesque journey. You’ll be riding a narrow-gauge, wood-fired 1932 steam train from the last of Romania’s old forestry lines, maneuvering tight curves along the Vaser River and into the deep woods. Hear the train whistle and the hiss of the steam, and enjoy the peacefulness of nature as you access a part of wild Romania not often seen. The Vaser River Railway, built to replace rafts as a more modern transportation mode for timber, is the only one of its kind still in operation. A full day dedicated to its enjoyment is a rare treat that will transport you back to the sights and sounds of another era. The railway comprises 60 kilometers of track and now constitutes a part of the Maramureș Mountains Nature Park. The ride offers a delightful experience to tourists ready to leave the beaten path and relax in nature.

At Paltin Station, enjoy a catered picnic lunch consisting of mouthwatering sandwiches and salads. Friendly staff in traditional local dress will serve your lunch. If you’d like, take a short, easy hike to enjoy an incredible view of the mountains and the valley below.

Later in the afternoon, take the train back down to Viseu de Sus.
